PhD thesis "Speciation and transfer of radionuclides in humans with special consideration of decorporation agents"
Within the framework of the BMBF-funded joint project RADEKOR "Speciation and transfer of radionuclides in humans under special consideration of decorporation agents", the mechanisms of the effect of decorporation agents on radionuclides in the body are being investigated. In particular, DTPA, which is used for the decorporation of actinides, is being considered. The partners are investigating the physiological processes responsible for the distribution of the radionuclides in the body and the interaction with the decorporation agent on a molecular and cellular level.
The aim of the subproject is to create a model for the biokinetics of radionuclides of the actinide series, in which the influences of the decorporation therapy with the chelating agent DTPA can be mapped. In addition to the modelling in compartment formalism used in radiation protection, techniques of physiologically based pharmacokinetic modelling (PBPK) will be used. The database is based on case data published in the literature and information from the United States Transuranium and Uranium Registries (USTUR/Washington State University), with which intensive cooperation (including longer stays on site) is planned. Based on the database you have compiled you will create a biokinetic model for incorporated actinides. In this model, the physiological processes responsible for the distribution of the radionuclide should be clearly identified. Based on this, you will map the effects of the decorporation agents and expand the model accordingly. You will successively integrate the new findings of the project partners on the speciation of the actinides and the influence of the decorporation agent into the model. You will use the model for the evaluation of case studies and further optimize it. You will present your work at national and international conferences and publish it in professional journals. Throughout the entire project you will work together with the consortium partners, the USTUR and other partners from the European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS).
You have a master's degree (or equivalent) in natural or engineering sciences and are interested in physiological processes and their mathematical modelling. Programming experience (C/C++ or similar) is required to implement the models. Experience in radiation protection and dosimetry is an advantage. The position is limited to three years and offers the opportunity to obtain a doctorate in engineering at the KIT Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology.
