PhD thesis "Biokinetics and dose calculations for NORM materials"
Naturally occurring radioactive substances (NORM), such as radon, are responsible for a large part of the radiation exposure of the population. In the EU-funded project RADONORM, radiation protection measures for NORM exposures are considered from different points of view. Work Package 3 deals with dosimetry for radon and NORM, which is done by applying biokinetic and dosimetric models.
The aim of the subproject you are working on is to identify and quantify the uncertainties that occur in the dosimetry of radon and NORM. After a literature study on the models and their physiological basis, you will develop a program in which the biokinetic and dosimetric models can be solved and dose calculations for different exposure scenarios can be performed. With the program you will carry out dose calculations together with other partners as a basis for epidemiological studies. Based on physiological considerations, you describe the uncertainties of the individual model parameters using suitable statistical distributions (Prior) and propagate them through the models to quantify the overall dose uncertainty (Posterior). You will consider the contributions of the individual models and the uncertainties resulting from the description of the exposure scenarios separately and in combination. In addition to these global uncertainty analyses, you will conduct sensitivity analyses to identify the parameters of the models that are relevant for dose calculation. In the project you will work closely with the international partners, present your results at project meetings and conferences and publish them in scientific journals.
You have a master's degree (or equivalent) in natural or engineering sciences, are experienced in uncertainty and data analysis and are interested in physiological processes and their mathematical modelling. Programming experience (C/C++ or similar) is required to implement the models. Experience in radiation protection and dosimetry is an advantage. The position is limited to three years and offers the opportunity to obtain a doctorate in engineering at the KIT Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology.
