IMT 35-18 Master Thesis: Investigating miniaturized energy storage devices (µ-batteries & µ-supercapacitors) using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy

Beschreibung

Presently there are continuous research efforts in developing new materials and electrochemical systems for novel energy storage devices for applications such as portable electronics or electric vehicles. These new materials and systems should offer high capacity, long life cycle, high rate performance, and safety. In this context, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy plays an important role as the premier investigation method used for chemical analysis in a wide variety of systems. This important role is due to the exquisite chemical specificity offered by NMR spectroscopy.

In the framework of this project carried out at the Spin and Photon Application (SPA-) Lab at IMT, various miniaturized NMR detectors will be investigated in order to enable in situ, in operando, real time NMR characterization of energy storage devices such as micro-batteries and micro-supercapacitors.

The specific tasks within the project will be: (i) design and electromagnetic simulation using COMSOL of the miniaturized NMR detectors for in situ characterization of energy storage devices; (ii) fabrication and electrical characterization of the miniaturized NMR detectors; (iii) application to real energy storage structures – in situ, in operando NMR spectroscopy of energy storage devices

You will be part of a larger team within the SPA-Lab. Within this project, you will use the infrastructure existent at the Institute of Microstructure Technology (IMT), i.e., microfabrication facilities, micro-characterisation equipment and computing infrastructure. This is a complete project, offering the possibility to design, fabricate and test the devices, giving you the opportunity to co-author conference and/or journal publications.

good academic record (marks); curious about various aspects of science;

enthusiastic to work in a multidisciplinary environment;

independent thinker and team player;

in particular: strong interest in electrical engineering, electromagnetics, electrochemistry, energy storage devices;

knowledge in microsystems/microfabrication/microfluidics is desirable.
